A British original: BA introduces new safety video featuring colleagues and iconic British settings

British Airways has launched a new safety video, “A British Original Period Drama,” to keep customers engaged with vital safety messaging during flights.

The five-minute film, directed by Sharon Maguire, known for “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” features more than 40 British Airways colleagues and takes viewers on a journey through Britain’s rich history, showcasing grand country houses and iconic period drama elements. The safety video debuts on long-haul flights starting 1 August.

Recognising the popularity of British period dramas, British Airways has created this unique video to resonate with both its UK and international customers.

The film portrays scenes from a bygone era with lords, ladies and household staff going about their daily lives in lavish country estates, only to be interrupted by present-day British Airways crew members demonstrating essential safety procedures. This blend of humour and historical charm aims to capture the attention of passengers, ensuring they are fully engaged with the safety messages.

Period Drama: British Airways’ new safety video features scenes reminiscent of popular television costume dramas

Calum Laming, British Airways’ Chief Customer Officer, explained the rationale behind this creative approach:

We know that these videos deliver vital safety information, and it is so important that we do everything we can to keep our customers engaged throughout. When it came to selecting a genre, we wanted something that would enable us to do this while resonating with global audiences, so a period drama with a little bit of humour seemed like the perfect fit.

Sharon Maguire, the director of the new safety video, praised the collaborative effort that went into the production:

We put together a dream team of industry legends, from Jenny Beavan to Kave Quinn and Erik Wilson to Jack Ravenscroft. We definitely wouldn’t have pulled it off without them. They just loved the idea created by the talented and lovely creative teams at Uncommon and British Airways.

The video was shot across some of Britain’s most picturesque country houses, including Hatfield House in Hertfordshire and Englefield House Estate in Berkshire. Costumes were designed by three-time Oscar-winning British costume designer Jenny Beavan and colleagues were coached by renowned dialect coach Jill McCullough to perfect their period accents, adding authenticity to the production.

In line with British Airways’ commitment to showcasing British talent, the video reflects the unique aspects of British culture. Passengers can also enjoy menus featuring the best of British cuisine and inflight entertainment starring British talent, further enhancing their experience on board.

Reflecting on the benefits for business travellers, Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said:

For UK-based business travellers, staying engaged and informed during flights is crucial. British Airways’ new safety video is not only a creative masterpiece but also a testament to their dedication to passenger safety. It ensures travellers, whether frequent flyers or first-time passengers, are both entertained and well-prepared.

British Airways continues to focus on putting its people at the heart of its campaigns. The safety video features a diverse range of colleagues, from pilots and cabin crew to engineers and airport staff, all playing themselves. This approach underscores the airline’s message that it is their people who make them unique.

Helen Lau, a British Airways First Officer who plays herself in the video, shared her excitement:

As a First Officer, my job means I am in the flight deck during the safety briefing, so to know that I will be appearing on the video in the cabins feels very surreal. I love the closing line which says stay safe, look after one another and never change, which featured in the previous video, and I hope is carried onto the next. It’s such a touching and uniting phrase.

London City Airport gains approval to boost passenger capacity to 9 million annually

The UK Government has approved London City Airport’s plans to increase its annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million, alongside allowing three additional flights in the first half-hour of weekday operations, providing greater capacity and convenience for business travellers.

However, proposals to extend the airport’s Saturday afternoon operating hours have been rejected.

The increase in the passenger cap is set to enhance London City Airport’s role as a vital hub for business travel, offering more options and flexibility for UK-based business travellers.

This move does not involve an increase in the number of annual flights or any additional infrastructure but is focused on optimising current operations. The approval also aligns with London City’s commitment to environmental responsibility by allowing only cleaner, quieter, next-generation aircraft during extended operating periods—a first for a UK airport.

Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, expressed mixed reactions to the decision:

While we welcome the approval to increase our passenger numbers, we are disappointed with the Government’s decision to reject our proposal to fly from 12:30pm to 6:30pm on Saturday afternoons.” She added, “As the Government has recognised in its decision, rejecting our request to extend our Saturday afternoon operating hours will slow down airlines bringing cleaner, quieter next generation aircraft to the airport. Local residents would have had the added benefit of these aircraft operating at the airport throughout the week, not just in the extended operating hours.

The proposal to extend operating hours on Saturday afternoons aimed to provide more choice and flexibility for passengers, including business travellers who rely on weekend flights. The current closure time of 12:30pm on Saturdays will remain unchanged following the decision. The airport had sought a new closing time of 6:30pm after an extensive consultation process but was ultimately unsuccessful.

Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, highlighted the benefits of this decision for business travellers:

The increase in passenger capacity at London City Airport is a welcome development for UK-based business travellers. It ensures more flight options during the week, helping to accommodate the needs of busy professionals who rely on efficient and flexible travel schedules. London City’s commitment to deploying quieter, next-generation aircraft is an added advantage for our clients who prioritise sustainability in their business travel.

The decision to reject the Saturday afternoon extension means airlines may face challenges in introducing the latest, most efficient aircraft into service at London City Airport. Nevertheless, the increase in the passenger cap is expected to bring considerable benefits to business travellers seeking better connectivity and convenience.

Western Sydney International Airport secures Singapore Airlines as first international carrier

Western Sydney International Airport has secured its first international airline, with Singapore Airlines confirming its intention to operate at Sydney’s new 24-hour airport.

This milestone marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between Western Sydney Airport and the Skytrax certified 5-Star Airline, as commercial discussions continue regarding the airline’s future operations at Australia’s first greenfield airport in more than fifty years.

Simon Hickey, CEO of Western Sydney International Airport, highlighted the significance of this arrangement, emphasising the airport’s unique scheduling opportunities:

This inaugural international airline arrangement is a fantastic milestone for Western Sydney International Airport and reflects the positive response we’ve had from airlines, especially in regard to the unprecedented opportunities our 24-hour capability unlocks.

Hickey also pointed out the advantages for business travellers, noting that the airport’s late-night departure capacity could enable Singapore Airlines passengers to complete a full day’s work in Sydney, take an overnight flight, and arrive in Singapore in time for a morning meeting.

Additionally, these late-night departures will offer passengers more efficient transit options via Singapore’s award-winning Changi Airport, connecting them to one of the 125 destinations served by the Singapore Airlines Group. The airport’s commitment to a smooth and simple customer experience, supported by the latest technology, has been another key factor in attracting Singapore Airlines.

Hickey explained,

Our combined international and domestic terminal will give Singapore Airlines customers a seamless transfer experience, while our state-of-the-art baggage system and efficient design, including five-minute taxi times on the tarmac, means passengers will be able to get on their flight faster and relax and enjoy the award-winning service on board

The new airport, located in Western Sydney’s culturally diverse region, home to more than 150 different ancestries, will also open up new travel opportunities for local residents who frequently visit family or friends overseas. With the airport construction now more than 80 per cent complete, including the recent terminal roof installation, Hickey expressed excitement about the progress and the future experience for passengers flying from WSI in late 2026.

Global Travel Management Sales Director Paul Baker said,

This new partnership between Western Sydney International Airport and Singapore Airlines is great news for UK-based business travellers. It opens up more flexible travel options, allowing our clients to maximise their productivity with convenient late-night departures and seamless connections through Singapore’s Changi Airport. This development will undoubtedly enhance the travel experience for our customers who do business in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Louis Arul, reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to enhancing network connectivity and providing additional services for Australia, a major market for the Singapore Airlines Group.

This agreement reflects our commitment to enhancing network connectivity for travellers to and from Sydney, and providing additional services for Australia,” said Mr Arul. He also highlighted the unique opportunity to collaborate with a greenfield airport to set a new standard for customer experience throughout the airport ecosystem.

This agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023, which set the framework for exploring the airport’s future functionality, customer experience, sustainability, operational efficiency, and mutual commercial opportunities. Western Sydney International Airport is on track to commence domestic, international, and air cargo services by late 2026.

Delta expands free streaming quality Wi-Fi to transatlantic flights

Delta Air Lines has begun rolling out fast, free Wi-Fi on select long-haul international routes, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s journey towards offering complimentary, reliable, streaming-quality connectivity across its entire global fleet. This development is expected to cover most transatlantic flights by the end of the summer.

Starting this summer, Delta passengers on certain Viasat-equipped international flights can enjoy free Wi-Fi, presented by T-Mobile, as part of the airline’s broader initiative to extend this service globally.

Streaming quality: passengers on Delta Air Lines flights can enjoy free, high speed Wi-Fi

Currently, free Wi-Fi is available on nearly 700 aircraft, covering more than 90% of Delta’s domestic mainline fleet. The airline anticipates that most customers will have access to this service by the end of the year.

Ranjan Goswami, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience Design at Delta, highlighted the significance of this rollout, stating,

As we continue to roll out fast, free Wi-Fi and the in-flight experiences it powers, we’re able to serve customers travelling both domestically and internationally in new, in-the-moment ways. The scale at which we’re bringing free Wi-Fi to customers is unmatched in the airline industry, and it’s a testament to the incredible efforts of Delta teams across the business that have expertly navigated an extremely complex rollout.

Delta is implementing this service on Viasat-equipped widebody aircraft on a route-by-route basis to ensure it meets the high standards expected by customers.

Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management said,

Delta’s introduction of fast, free Wi-Fi on transatlantic routes is a significant benefit for UK-based business travellers. The ability to stay connected and work efficiently during long-haul flights will greatly enhance productivity, making it easier to manage international business commitments without interruption. This advancement underscores the ongoing improvements in business travel, ensuring our clients can maximise their time in the air.

Additional routes will be gradually introduced as reliable, high-quality service becomes available, following a phased strategy similar to that used for domestic installations in 2022.

Ranjan Goswami: the scale at which we’re bringing free Wi-Fi to customers is unmatched in the airline industry

Initially, the international Wi-Fi portal will not require passengers to log in with their SkyMiles account. However, later this year, all Viasat Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft will transition to the Delta Sync Wi-Fi experience, offering personalised onboard experiences and exclusive offers to SkyMiles members.

Leeds Bradford Airport unveils £200 million Vision 2030 Strategy to boost Yorkshire’s connectivity

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has unveiled its ambitious Vision 2030 strategy, which includes a £200 million investment from the private sector aimed at transforming passenger experience, driving sustainable growth and enhancing Yorkshire’s international connectivity. This strategic plan is set to generate up to 5,500 new jobs and contribute nearly £1 billion to the local economy, with an anticipated growth to seven million passengers per year by 2030.

The Vision 2030 strategy is a significant step forward, building upon LBA’s recent LBA:REGEN development.

The plan includes a strong focus on sustainability, aligning with the airport’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 – one of the most ambitious targets of any UK airport.

Key initiatives include the decarbonisation of transport links, investment in solar-powered infrastructure on-site and the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities.

The airport also reaffirms its support for the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s mass transit system proposals, which aim to connect the airport to an integrated cycling, walking, bus, and rail network.

Mayoral praise: Tracy Brabin hails a better-connected West Yorkshire

A central feature of the Vision 2030 plans is the expansion of terminal floorspace by 38%, alongside significant investment in the airfield to introduce up to ten new aircraft stands. These new stands are intended to attract quieter, more efficient aircraft, boost the number of destinations served and enhance existing routes.

The airport is also keen to secure additional routes to European hub airports, as well as new destinations in the North Atlantic and the Middle East.

Vincent Hodder, CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, described the strategy as “a new era of travel for the region,” highlighting its potential to enhance international connectivity, support local economic growth, and attract global investment. He emphasised the airport’s commitment to a net-zero carbon future, stating,

Our commitment is bold and ambitious, but we are firm in our stance to build a net-zero carbon future for the airport.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, praised the Vision 2030 strategy,

Leeds Bradford Airport’s ‘Vision 2030’ document clearly states how the airport will improve Yorkshire’s connection to the rest of the world. This substantial private investment will benefit local communities and the wider Yorkshire region, serving as a catalyst for considerable, long-term economic growth.

The airport’s plans promise to create a range of skilled jobs and bolster connectivity among key international markets, creating new opportunities for Yorkshire business overseas.

The commitment to net zero carbon emissions for the airport’s ground operations is a great first step.

Industry-wide, there’s much still to do to decarbonise aviation as a whole, and I look forward to seeing how Leeds Bradford can contribute to that. We have performed competitively as a region for several decades, despite longstanding issues with connectivity.

But, alongside my plan for significantly improved public transport in a better-connected West Yorkshire, now is the perfect time to improve the international gateway to our region.

Vincent Hodder: “a new era of travel for the region”

Looking beyond 2030, Leeds Bradford Airport has also outlined longer-term ambitions, including the potential development of a new purpose-built terminal, the construction of a new hotel within walking distance of the airport, and the expansion of specialist air freight services.

SkyTeam expands environmental initiative with The Aviation Challenge

SkyTeam has announced a significant evolution in its environmental initiative by renaming The Sustainable Flight Challenge to The Aviation Challenge, signalling its broader vision to drive meaningful change across the airline industry.

This year marks a significant expansion of the programme, as SkyTeam has invited non-SkyTeam airlines to participate for the first time, reflecting the alliance’s commitment to fostering industry-wide innovation.

Patrick Roux: a proactive stance to help address the environmental impact of flying

The Aviation Challenge, now in its third year, brings together 24 global airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, Air France, China Airlines and SAS.

The airlines share a common goal: to discover and implement innovative ideas that can reduce the environmental impact of air travel. This expansion highlights SkyTeam’s determination to create a collective movement towards sustainability in aviation, with participants aiming to scale up and implement solutions that have been generated in previous challenges.

Patrick Roux, SkyTeam CEO, commented on the initiative’s broader scope:

By scaling up and implementing solutions generated in previous years and widening its scope, we expect The Aviation Challenge to realise increased potential to reduce flying’s environmental impact, helping participants to further their own sustainability goals. While we await greater production of SAF and the future technology our industry needs, The Aviation Challenge is bringing together global airlines and stakeholders from across aviation in a proactive stance to help address the environmental impact of flying.

Since its inception in 2022, the challenge has inspired participating airlines to generate 465 innovative solutions aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. These solutions span various aspects of airline operations, including the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), flight path optimisation, waste reduction and improved cargo handling.

Unlike its predecessors, this year’s challenge focuses on the practical implementation and scaling of these solutions, with airlines demonstrating their effectiveness through showcase flights. Virgin Atlantic, for example, will highlight key learnings from its Flight100, the first flight powered entirely by sustainable aviation fuel.

The Aviation Challenge’s impact will be assessed by a diverse panel of global sustainability and aviation experts. These experts will evaluate the submissions based on their effectiveness and scalability, with criteria developed in collaboration with leading aerospace professionals, including PA Consulting and the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Center (NLR).

The 72 flights operated as part of last year’s challenge saw an average improvement of 19% in CO2 intensity, resulting in the elimination of 30 tons of emissions. These impressive results underscore the potential of The Aviation Challenge to drive significant environmental improvements across the industry.

The airlines participating in The Aviation Challenge 2024 include Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air Europa Express, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Corendon Dutch Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Endeavor Air, Garuda Indonesia, JamboJet, Kenya Airways, KLM, KLM Cityhopper, Korean Air, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Saudia, Shanghai Airlines, TAROM, TUI Airline, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and XiamenAir.

Qantas Partners with Rio Tinto and BHP in $250m Carbon Fund

Qantas has solidified its commitment to sustainable business practices by joining forces with Rio Tinto and BHP as foundational investors in a pioneering new fund designed to develop high-integrity, nature-based carbon projects across Australia. This collaborative effort is aimed at advancing Australia’s environmental sustainability while addressing the pressing challenges of carbon emissions in hard-to-abate industries such as aviation.

The fund, known as the Silva Carbon Origination Fund, is managed by Silva Capital—a joint venture between Roc Partners and C6 Investment Management. It seeks to raise $250 million to originate and manage Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) on a large scale, generated primarily through land reforestation projects and integrated agricultural initiatives. The investment is significant as it positions the fund as one of the first in Australia to offer investors access to a robust supply of high-integrity ACCUs.

Andrew Parker: carbon offsets to continue to grow

Qantas, through its AUD$400 million Climate Fund established in 2023, has committed $80 million to this groundbreaking initiative. The Climate Fund was created to support the Qantas Group’s decarbonisation efforts, which include significant investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in partnership with Airbus. These efforts underscore Qantas’ broader strategy to combat climate change and contribute to the global push for emissions reduction.

The Silva Carbon Origination Fund will be instrumental in helping Qantas meet its compliance obligations under the Australian Government’s Safeguard Mechanism Policy and the Paris Agreement’s global emissions reduction targets. As demand for high-quality, nature-based carbon credits is expected to rise, particularly in sectors where emissions are difficult to eliminate entirely, Qantas’ involvement in this fund is both timely and strategic.

Andrew Parker, Qantas’ Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the importance of this investment in enhancing Qantas’ carbon market strategy:

For hard to abate sectors, such as aviation, high-integrity carbon offsets will play an important role in achieving climate targets. We expect the demand for carbon offsets to continue to grow into the future and it’s going to take partnerships across industries to enhance the overall availability of high-quality, high-integrity carbon credits.

Mr. Parker further emphasised Qantas’ commitment to nature-based solutions, stating,

The Silva Carbon Origination Fund will enable us to continue to elevate our carbon market strategy while also helping to positively shape the development of the overall industry. Through our Climate Fund, we continue to turn our attention to Australian projects that create ecological and economic benefits.

Silva Capital’s approach to acquiring agricultural land in Australia is unique in its dual focus on carbon sequestration and sustainable land management practices. By prioritising projects that reforest cleared land while ensuring it remains productive for farming, the fund aims to deliver significant biodiversity, economic, and conservation benefits to local communities.

This investment is part of a broader momentum within Qantas’ sustainability initiatives. The airline has recently made strides through its Climate Fund by investing in various projects, including the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Financing Alliance (SAFFA) to boost global biofuel production, and a biofuel production facility in Queensland being developed by Jet Zero Australia in collaboration with LanzaJet.
