Cymbals of success: 400 years of Zildjian

How does a 400-year old company maintain its position at the very pinnacle of its industry?

That’s a question we looked to answer by talking to Zildjian – a company founded in the 17th century Ottoman Empire.

For four centuries, Zildjian has been producing what are regarded as the world’s finest cymbals.

Initially launched from a tiny foundry in Samatya, Istanbul the business now manufactures its cymbals from its factory in North America.

Fourteenth generation members of the Zildjian family run the company and the fifteenth generation already forms part of the firm, one of the oldest family-run businesses in the world.

In 2010, Zildjian joined forces with the Vic Firth Company, makers of world-famous drumsticks and in 2018 Zildjian acquired Balter Mallets. In this way, Zildjian is able to supply drummers worldwide with the key tools to make their music: cymbals and sticks.

To help us get beneath the skin of one of the world’s oldest companies, we asked Bob Wiczling, Marketing and A&R Manager of Zildjian to help us find out.

GTM –Zildjian was established in 1623 – what’s the secret to the company’s longevity?

Bob Wiczling, Marketing and A&R, Zildjian and Vic Firth:

Incredible sounding and beautifully crafted Instruments, 400 years of cymbal making know how, and most importantly working with and listening to the needs of the world’s greatest drummers and percussionists.

GTM – The “Zildjian family” of drummers reads like a “Who’s Who” of percussionists.  The list comprises some of the greatest ever drummers, including Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts, Roger Taylor, Mick Fleetwood, Dave Grohl, Steve Gadd, Zak Starkey, Nate Smith, Art Blakely, Ginger Baker and Taylor Hawkins.  Who are some of your favourite Zildjian drummers?

Bob:

There are too many to list here but certainly Ringo and Charlie Watts were my initial inspiration, now from Gadd to Grohl to a whole new generation of players, the art of drumming continues to evolve and amaze me.

GTM –Your products are used in the widest imaginable range of music genres, from pop and rock, to metal, punk, new wave, jazz and classical.  Is the key to the company’s success its versatility?

Bob:

Without doubt, innovation is in our DNA.

In covering so many musical genres but also supplying a wealth of sounds available to each genre.

Importantly too by following the fashion, as music changes we look to make sure we supply the sounds drummers and percussionists are looking for.

GTM – Zildjian is based in Norwell, Massachusetts, with offices in Newport, ME, Los Angeles, CA, London, UK, Beijing, China and Singapore.  Your colleagues are busy with exhibitions, gigs and promotions all round the world.  What causes you headaches when you’re arranging travel for your colleagues?

Bob:

Making arrangements are usually straight forward, though flight cancellations and delays are the pet hates!

GTM –Global Travel Management is “only” twenty five years old.  But, in that time, GTM has managed your company’s business travel.  What do you think of the service GTM continues to provide for you?

Bob:

Well, we have shared our travel experiences for quite a time!

Scott and the whole team have always been incredible, coming up with the best options and always there for when you need help.

Thank you !

British Airways partners with Learning Rose to offer Visual Guide for autism-friendly flying

British Airways has announced a new partnership with Learning Rose, an organisation that creates support material for individuals with autism, in recognition of World Autism Acceptance Week.

As part of this partnership, British Airways has become the first airline in the UK to produce a Visual Guide to Flying, which has been endorsed by the National Autistic Society.

First: British Airways becomes the first airline in the UK to launch a visual guide to flying

The guide can be downloaded from the airline’s website, and it uses simple icons and text to describe different parts of the flying experience to help customers with autism prepare for their journey and feel comfortable during their flight.

The Visual Guide is just the first initiative of the partnership, and it is accompanied by British Airways staff training and support, as well as bespoke staff consultation sessions, to ensure that the airline’s staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide the best possible service to customers with autism.

British Airways has a dedicated customer care team that customers can liaise with to discuss and arrange appropriate assistance for each individual, whether that be assistance through the airport and on board, pre-allocation of seats, or updating a booking to ensure cabin and ground crew are aware of any support that customers may require.

Rebecca Taylor, founder of Learning Rose and a former British Airways cabin crew member whose son has autism, is proud to partner with British Airways to help ease travel anxieties that people with autism may face.

She said,

I know from both my experience working as cabin crew and from travelling with my son that flying can sometimes be overwhelming for people with autism, so I am delighted to be working with British Airways to help ease any travel anxieties that people with autism may face.

British Airways was the first UK airline to be awarded the renowned Autism Friendly Award by the National Autistic Society, and the first formally to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme, partnering with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.

Calum Laming, Chief Customer Officer at British Airways said,

At British Airways we welcome more than half a million customers who require special assistance each year and we’re fully committed to making sure our service is accessible to all. We’re always looking for ways to improve the experience for customers with visible and non-visible disabilities. Our partnership with Learning Rose is just one of the many initiatives we have in place to make flying as stress-free as possible and we’re looking forward to further strengthening and enhancing our partnership going forward.

There are dedicated check-in areas at London Heathrow Airport for those requiring additional assistance, and customers have the option to add any requirements to their booking in advance of traveling through the ‘Manage My Booking’ tool on ba.com.

As a UK-based business traveller, if you or someone you know has autism and will be traveling with British Airways, this new partnership with Learning Rose could be very helpful. The Visual Guide to Flying, endorsed by the National Autistic Society, provides a simple and easy-to-use guide to help customers with autism prepare for their journey and feel comfortable during their flight. In addition, the airline’s dedicated customer care team can assist with arranging appropriate assistance for each individual, whether that be assistance through the airport and on board, pre-allocation of seats, or updating a booking to ensure cabin and ground crew are aware of any support that customers may require.

British Airways’ commitment to making its service accessible to all, as well as its recognition by the National Autistic Society, demonstrates its dedication to providing a comfortable and stress-free travel experience for all of its customers.

Etihad Airways launches new scheduled flight between Abu Dhabi and Beijing Daxing Airport

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), launched its first scheduled flight between Abu Dhabi and Beijing Daxing Airport on 28 March 2023. This move will be of particular interest to business travellers from the UK who are looking to expand their reach into China’s business market.

The inaugural flight, EY888, was operated using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and marked the switch of regular flights from Abu Dhabi to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). Previously, Etihad operated to Beijing Capital International Airport.

Arik De, Chief Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, said,

With China’s reopening and the restart of the aviation and tourism industries, we are very glad to see the long overdue move of our scheduled services to Beijing Daxing International Airport, which will further strengthen our commitment to the country’s aviation market development and Chinese travellers. The integrated transportation facilities at Beijing Daxing International Airport will give Etihad Airways access to a huge catchment area around Beijing West Rail Station. We will be working closely with local partners to transfer Etihad’s rich experience in Europe working with intermodal rail service operators to Daxing to allow greater choice at a competitive fare on a single connecting ticket through air-rail modality.

2023 also marks the 15th anniversary of Etihad Airways’ services in China and its Abu Dhabi-Beijing route. With the continuous consolidation and strengthening of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the UAE and China, political, economic, trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries have become more frequent.

Etihad Airways maintains its support for and commitment to its Chinese partners and the China market, and its contribution to the growing bilateral relationship.

Wang Yaqi, General Manager of Aviation Business at Beijing Daxing International Airport, said,

Abu Dhabi Airports Company signed an MoU to build a sister-airport relationship with Beijing Daxing International Airport in 2019, which strengthened the capital-to-capital link. Etihad Airways is one of the first airlines in the Middle East to move to Beijing Daxing International Airport, and we congratulate them on this successful inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi to Beijing Daxing International Airport.

Beijing Daxing International Airport believes that on the basis of win-win cooperation, both sides will inject new vitality into the recovery of civil aviation in China and even the world, while at the same time, making a greater contribution to the people and business ties between the two countries.

Etihad Airways’ first outbound flight will depart Beijing Daxing on March 30th, allowing UK business travellers choosing Abu Dhabi as their destination or a stopover to explore the emirate’s breathtaking landscapes, a thriving arts and culture scene, top shopping destinations, magnificent attractions and world-class events. Connecting passengers will have access to more than 70 destinations via the Abu Dhabi hub. Additionally, Etihad Airways has recently added popular European destinations such as Düsseldorf, Copenhagen and Lisbon, expanding the airline’s European network while providing UK business travellers with more convenient travel and holiday options.

Etihad’s Boeing 787 aircraft feature innovative, award-winning cabin designs and products, complemented by the airline’s acclaimed service and hospitality offerings. This exciting new development by Etihad Airways is set to benefit UK business travellers seeking to expand their reach into China’s business market while enjoying world-class service and amenities.

Loganair expands at Heathrow, offering new opportunities for UK business travellers

Loganair, the UK’s largest regional airline, has recently announced that it will be expanding its operations at London Heathrow, offering more opportunities and better connections for UK-based business travellers.

The airline has secured access to 30 additional pairs of slots each week at Heathrow under a lease arrangement with British Airways, which will come into effect in May 2023.

Jonathan Hinkles: important first steps

These slots will enable Loganair to develop regional connectivity from UK domestic destinations to the UK’s premier hub, offering both point-to-point access into London and a wide range of new global connections via Heathrow.

Loganair’s Chief Executive, Jonathan Hinkles, expressed his delight in the company’s expansion at Heathrow. He said,

Having taken these important first steps ourselves to provide new connectivity to and from the UK regions under this arrangement, it’s now essential for the UK Government to initiate the process needed to reform competition remedies to provide access to Heathrow for the UK regions.”

This move is expected to create new business opportunities for UK-based travellers. The details of the specific routes to be served will be announced in the coming days.

The airline’s campaign to reform competition remedies has gained support from key figures, including John Holland-Kaye, the Chief Executive of Heathrow Airport; Willie Walsh, the Director General of IATA; Dr Liz Cameron CBE, the Chief Executive of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce.

Loganair has called on the UK Government to repatriate control of competition remedies dating back to 2012, under which these Heathrow slots were previously made available to other airlines, predominantly for domestic routes.

This expansion by Loganair comes soon after changes to Heathrow’s tariffs for regional aircraft operating on UK domestic routes took effect from January 2023.

The new tariffs are critical to the viability of Loganair’s plans to provide regional connectivity at Heathrow.

With the additional slots and the potential for new routes, Loganair’s expansion at Heathrow offers new possibilities for UK-based business travellers seeking to connect with domestic destinations and global connections.

As a result, more and more wine enthusiasts are turning to English sparkling wines as a premium choice, making them an exciting addition to British Airways’ Club World menu.

In addition to the English Sparkling wine selection, British Airways is launching Whispering Angel Provence Rosé and The Pale, curated from the same Château d’Esclans vineyards, for customers to enjoy across its lounges at London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

The airline continues to spotlight destinations through its premium wine selection, celebrating different destinations in its network each quarter.

Air France launches a new baggage range in collaboration with Delesy

Air France and Delsey have renewed their collaboration and launched a new range of luggage called Allure, combining French know-how and elegance.

The two French travel specialists have reinterpreted the codes that made their previous range New Envol successful to offer a completely revised version.

With a more ‘assertive’ design, Allure combines strength and lightness for an elegant journey.

Available in black and navy blue, the range is also available for the first time in ivory, recalling the soft tones of Air France’s most exclusive cabin, La Première.

Each suitcase has a ’twill’ finish reminiscent of the fashion world and allowing the luggage to be more resistant to scratches. And with a view to demonstrating a more sustainable approach, the suitcase lining is made of recycled fabric.

The Allure collection is available in three sizes, including one specially designed for cabin travel, weighing just 2.7kg.

Each suitcase is also equipped with Delsey’s latest technology: 100% polycarbonate construction, four silent multidirectional double wheels, a patented SECURITECH Zip opening, and an integrated combination lock with TSA accessibility.

This new line is available from Air France.

Characteristics:

  • 5-year warranty;
  • Three colours: black, navy blue and ivory;
  • Three sizes: small, medium and large;
  • Prices: €229, €269 and €299.
  • A system allowing the suitcase to be locked with a personal code while allowing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to inspect the contents using its TSA key.
