The Public & Commercial Services union has called a 1 day strike today, Wednesday 20th March.
This strike will impact UK Border Agency staff at airports and other ports around the UK. Unfortunately this information has only just reached us, hence the late posting.
According to the union’s web site another walk-out is also planned for Friday 5th April starting at 1pm.
Next week’s planned strike action by Iberia workers has, thankfully, now been called off. Unions representing most workers at the Spanish airline cancelled next week’s industrial action after they accepted a mediator’s proposal regarding the proposed job losses. Iberia’s management have also accepted the proposal.

Pretoria — Strike action by the National Transport Movement (NTM) has not impacted operations at South African Airways (SAA), the airline said on Friday.
“There has been no impact whatsoever on SAA’s operations as a result of the strike. We emphasise that no flights have been cancelled or delayed as a result of the industrial action,” said SAA spokesperson Tlali.
Previously the NTM had served a notice to the airline for strike action last Friday.
In December, SAA met with NTM at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to conclude the verification process that would allow the union to be recognised by the airline.
However, the CCMA confirmed that the union has 1,111 members and needed to have 1220 to meet 30% of 4065 employees who are part of the bargaining unit. This therefore confirmed that NTM failed to meet the 30% threshold. This was the reason the NTM remains unrecognised at SAA.
Last week, the airline said it was committed to business-continuity and has a contingency plan to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience to customers.
From media reports: Bloomberg Businessweek reported on Thursday that airline and rail workers were planning to strike on 18th January over unmet union recognition demands.
Some 1,300 South African Airways staff and about 3,3000 workers at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa were planning to strike beginning Friday.
Most of the airline staffers work in technical, cargo, and ground staff capacities, and the strike impact on air traffic is not currently known.
The workers are demanding that state-owned employers recognize the National Transport Movement union as the majority staff representative, the news source indicated.
Further to our update below, posted on 7th November, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) strike, backed by unions in Greece, Portugal, Spain and the Canary Islands, could lead to many flights being disrupted for up to three days this week (13-15 November).
Passengers booked to fly on all affected European sectors should therefore checkin online for the most up to date information regarding their flight/s. Easyjet has already cancelled many of its flights to countries in southern Europe. British Airways said passengers due to travel to or from Spain on Wednesday 14 November can change to another date free of charge; they also warned that there could be disruptions on services to other European countries.
Iberia has cancelled more than 350 flights this week, including those on the Madrid to London route as a result of the strike, which affects air traffic controlers. TAP Portugal has announced that London to Lisbon flights will also be affected on 13 November and 15 November.
Tomorrow’s industrial action, which has been organised by the European Trade Union Confederation, is in response to austerity measures being taken by the governments of several southern European countries. Protest marches, rallies and strikes will affect different countries at different times.
Aer Lingus staff belonging to the SIPTU union are to go on strike next Monday 1st October over planned changes to their pension scheme.
Members who work at Dublin Airport Authority are also taking part in the industrial action.
SIPTU said the decision had been reached following the failure of both companies to put forward any meaningful proposals to resolve the dispute.
Flights and services at Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports could be affected.

Please note that the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation are reporting that baggage handlers at Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports are planning to strike this Friday, 21st September.
You may therefore wish to cram whatever you can into your hand luggage!
The union representing Lufthansa’s flight attendants has intensified its strike action. Tomorrow’s walkout has now affected a majority of the airline’s flight schedule.
The eight hour walkout will affect Lufthansa’s operations in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich & Stuttgart. The union represents over two thirds of Lufthansa’s 18,000 cabin crew, and is seeking a five percent pay increase backdated to January, after three years of wage freezes.

Finally, as this strike action continues to affect more of the airline’s operations, and with no forseeable end in sight to the dispute, please ensure (if you are booked to fly with Lufthansa in the near future) that you do check in online for your flight.
Notification of today’s strike by Lufthansa cabin crews was only announced by the airline at 0700 CET today. The union representing Lufthansa’s flight attendants refused to release details any earlier.
The strike officially started at 0500 this morning and will last until 1300 CET today. Please forward on to your colleagues as appropriate and recommend that anyone due to fly with Lufthansa today, checks in for their flight online, where they will find the most up to date information. We have already checked whether any of the tickets we’ve issued have been affected and will be in contact with those passengers very shortly.
