New Ryanair airport check-in rules to affect UK business travel from November 2026

Ryanair will increase its airport check-in and bag drop closure time from 40 minutes to 60 minutes before departure from 10 November 2026 in a move designed to help passengers navigate increasingly lengthy airport security and passport control queues.

The change will be particularly relevant to UK business travel passengers flying to and from Europe, especially those travelling on early morning flights or during peak periods when airport congestion can significantly impact throughput. Business travellers who check luggage on Ryanair services will now need to arrive at the airport earlier than before to avoid missing the revised cut-off, particularly as new European border processes continue to increase waiting times at some airports.

Ryanair confirmed that from Tuesday 10 November 2026, airport check-in and bag drop facilities across its network will close 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure, rather than the current 40-minute deadline. The airline said the adjustment is intended to “provide more time for passengers to get through airport security and passport queues” and reduce the number of travellers missing flights because of delays within airport terminals.

According to Ryanair, the change will primarily affect the estimated 20 per cent of passengers who check luggage into the aircraft hold. The remaining 80 per cent of passengers who travel with cabin baggage only will continue to check in online before arriving at the airport and proceed directly to security and their departure gate.

Ryanair Chief Marketing Officer Dara Brady said:

“From Tues 10 Nov next, Ryanair customers will see airport check-in and bag drops close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, instead of today’s 40 minutes. This will allow these 20% of our customers (who check in a bag) more time to clear through airport security and passport queues, and get to their departure gate on-time, especially during busy travel periods when some of these airport queues can be longer.”

The airline also confirmed that it is continuing to roll out self-service bag drop kiosks across its network, with more than 95 per cent of Ryanair-served airports expected to have the facilities installed by October 2026. The kiosks are integrated with the Ryanair app and will allow passengers to tag and check luggage more quickly, helping to reduce queues at traditional desks.

The announcement comes amid wider concerns across the European aviation sector about increasing border processing times linked to the phased implementation of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires biometric registration for many non-EU travellers entering and leaving the Schengen Area. UK passport holders travelling on business to Europe are expected to experience additional passport control formalities as the system becomes more widely adopted.

Paul Baker, Sales Director of Global Travel Management, said:

“This latest change from Ryanair highlights the importance of careful planning when travelling on business. Many business travellers operate to tight schedules, so understanding revised airport deadlines and allowing additional time for security and border procedures will help avoid unnecessary disruption to important meetings and events. As airports continue to adapt to new border technology and passenger processing requirements, preparation has become an increasingly important part of successful business travel.”

The revised check-in deadline follows several other recent operational changes introduced by Ryanair, including expanded self-service technology and increased emphasis on app-based and digital travel processes designed to speed up passenger journeys through airports.

Business travellers who regularly fly with Ryanair or other low-cost carriers should review their airport arrival procedures well in advance of travel, particularly when travelling with checked baggage or flying through busy European airports where security and passport queues can fluctuate significantly during peak periods.
